     Belle Meade is a satellite city within the boundaries of Metropolitan Nashville-Davidson County that is home to many of the city's most prominent and wealthy residents.
     Belle Meade, located in southwest Nashville, was developed in the early 20th Century by Luke Lea, owner of The Tennessean newspaper and a one-time U.S. Senator.
     Among its well-known current residents is former Vice President and global warming activist Al Gore.

     When the old city of Nashville merged with Davidson County in the early 1960s, Belle Meade was one of several existing municipalities that continued in existence with limited services. Belle Meade maintains its own police department and zoning regulations among other functions, but fire protection and other services are left to Metro Nashville.
      As of the 2000 Census, Belle Meade had 2,943 residents. The median household income was $144,720 a year.
