In this publication Nashville takes a hard look at itself and comes up smiling. The book is a lively, provative, endlessly engaging self-portrait of the city created by more than 100 writers, editors, photographers and artists. It is a time capsule in print that picks up Nashville's saga in 1980 and moves to the year 2000. There are more than 300 photographs. There is also an earlier companion volume about people and events from the mid 1700s to 1980 called Nashville: The Faces of Two Centuries.

The book captures the journey of the city through still photography gathered from multiple sources including private, city and state collections. The photos follow everyday life, government, education, events and other activities throughout Nashville' history from 1850 to the modern city. There are unique and rare scenes in the hundreds of photographs.
