Broadband Internet Options in Nashville

Although the options here in TN are not to the level of speed and
dependability of the fiber optic choices offered by verizon FIOS down in
Florida and in some other areas, or the free city-wide broadband wireless options in some
California cities - there are still many choices!

DSL, Cable, Satellite, U-verse, and Mobile broadband cards are all available options in the Middle Tennessee area.

In this topic, I would like to explain some of the pros and cons of each of these choices and hopefully others can chime in with comments
or edits to review their experiences with these various connection types.

 reliability high, works over pre-existing telephone lines
 speeds are not as fast as cable options - especially with upload rates, house must be within a certain physical distance of Bellsouth Networking hardware, PPPoe setup is difficult for most people to setup with their own Wi Fi router


  
 Comcast Cable Internet
  
 best bang for the buck (price/bandwidth), low latency (great for gaming), bundles with Digital TV, 
  
 There are many reports from users that some parts of the Comcast Highspeed Internet network around the city of Nashville are NOT as reliable others


  
 ATT U-verse
  
 VERY fast, can be bundled with a very impressive TV package
  
 very limited availability so far


  
 Sateillite Internet
  
 Generally the best option outside of the city where the other services will not work
  
 high latency, requires a landline, upload speed is only as good as dialup, must have a line of site shot to the satellite (trees and physical structures can be an issue, as can weather)


  
 Mobile Broadband Cards
  
 Offered by Cricket, ATT, Sprint, Verizon, T-mobile and can be bundled with cellphone package, can be used with a laptop anywhere in the country where broadband towers for the given network are present 
  
 broadband connection speed is not available everywhere, cell service is not as reliable as other options due to a myriad of reasons, although options are changing it is generally difficult to connect multiple computers to single broadband card for the average user
