Carter House
The Carter House, at 1140 Columbia Ave., in Franklin, TN, is a museum dedicated to telling the story of the Battleof Franklin, one of the bloodiest engagements of the Civil War.|
Federal troops had occupied the area around Nashville from 1862. In 1864, the Confederate Army of Tennesssee, led by Gen. John Bell Hood, mounted an offensive from Alabama towards the north. The two sides met in the Battle of Franklin on Nov. 30.

The Carter House was at the center of the battle. Confederate troops charged toward fortified Federal positions surrounding the Carter House. Fierce fighting ensued. Confederate casualties in the Battle of Franklin were 7,000. Federal casualties were 2,500.
After Confederate loss at Franklin, federal troops retreated north toward Nashville. The Confederates followed, resulting in a decisive Union victory and the retreat of Hood's army.
In 2009, the Carter House joined the Carnton Plantation in a strategic allliance that had the two organizations working together as part of the Battle of Franklin Trust.
