Cumberland River

The Cumberland River is an important waterway that flows right through downtown Nashville.  One can typically see many barges carrying large loads of rock, sand, and other materials throughout the southern United States.  To see some charts of the river please click here:  http://www.lrn.usace.army.mil/opn/CumbRiver/

A popular venue for concerts and happenings in downtown Nashville is the River Front Park.  This park is located on the west shoreline of the Cumberland at the intersection where Broadway tees off into 1st Avenue.  There is a pedestrian bridge that crosses near this area (but must be picked up several blocks west) that allows easy fan access to LP Field to watch the Tennessee Titans football games.

There are some people who fish the Cumberland, but it does not seem to be very popular.  There are some people who do watersports in the Cumberland, but it does not seem to be very popular.  There can frequently be some very large debris floating downstream.  There are several marinas such as Rock Harbor Marina located on the river, but it seems Nashvillians spend much more time on the other Lakes And Rivers in middle Tennessee despite the Cumberland's relatively easy access on the east and west sides of town.

Launching a boat into the Cumberland can be difficult.  There is a location listed in the Boat Ramps page in Ashland City, but there is also an area in West Nashville not too far from the Rock Harbor Marina.  It is not an idea place for larger boats, and if the current is strong or the river is low, it could be very difficult to launch a boat there.  One can also purchase yearly membership access to the Commodore Yacht Club further west of town out on River Road.
