Getting Rid Of Moles

Moles have increasingly become a problem around Nashville and Middle Tennessee. There are ways to get rid of them. At least for awhile. There are two principle ways to get rid of moles. Either they must be eliminated using a kill method or a more humane approach can be implemented. Killing methods are the most effective according to many experts.

A way to find an active more tunnel is to stomp on the above ground level tunnel formations. If the tunnel is active the mole will repair the tunnel within the next 24 hours. Another way its to watch your lawn until you see movement in the ground. This may take awhile. There is often more than one mole in a yard so be prepared to deal with at least a couple.

Humane Method

Catching

Dig into the the tunnel. Place a large jar or similar container at the level of the tunnel. Some stores may have a specialized trap. Cover the container with dirt. Check the container at least once a day to see if you have a mole. If you catch one release it in an open field where no one will care.

Another way is if you have time to watch your lawn and you see the dirt more, you can quickly dig up the area moving and find the mole. Using gloves place the animal into a suitable container and locate somewhere else. An interested cat can help in the location.

Electonic Device

A third way its to purchase an electronic device that emits a sound and vibration into the ground. This discourages moles from staying in your yard. The electronic devices are powered by batteries or solar power.

Flooding

Take a hose and place in the tunnel. Keep the water running until the mole comes out. Using gloves pick up and relocate.

Less Humane Methods

Inpaling or Cutting

If killing is okay you can use a spike or shovel to inpale or cut the mole in half if you see movement. You can follow the tunnels and keep chopping. You might get lucky.

Choking

There are traps that can be purchased that choke the mole.

Poison

There are devices that look like worms that can be placed in the tunnels. These are poisonious that the moles believe are food. Once eaten the moles die. The worms, which look much like a synthetic worm used in fishing, can be purchased in a store.

There are also poison pellets that can be placed in the tunnels. The moles eat and die. These can be purchased in stores.

The person who can invent a better mole trap will have the world beating down his door.

Someone said you can put mothballs in the tunnels. Do these work?

Someone also said you can put stuff on your lawn that kills grubs, which the moles feed on. No grubs -- no moles.

The CIA sometimes can catch moles.
