Most Nashville area grocery store chains have "discount" cards available for their customers. Customers must fill out an application at one of the chain store's locations or on line. Information from the appilication is utilized by the parent company and when the card is used the customer's shopping habits are tracked to determine merchandise selection. Using this information coupons are sent to the relevant customer by mail, email or provided at time of a purchase at checkout. The cards are also necessary to receive the advertised sales price when checking out and paying for merchandise.
Some of the major grocery companies in Middle Tennessee offering discount cards are Kroger, Harris Teeter and Food Lion.
