Interior Design Jobs

If you like to be involved in decorating the interiors of homes, businesses or industrial facilities – there is an occupation for you. It is big business in Nashville and Middle Tennessee. Interior designers and decorators are hired to evaluate, plan and design interiors from a single room to an entire building. They also are involved with architectural requirements, space planning and environmental issues.

Though often used interchangeably, there is a difference between an interior designer and interior decorator. Designers plan and create the design for interiors while decorators focus on more of the decorative features of design and furnishings. Some specialists can provide both aspects to a job.

Interior design and decoration draws from an artistic appeal in everyday life. It incorporates beauty, color, texture and style in a coordinated blend of taste for the beholder. Paint color, wallpaper, furniture, walls, draperies, sculptures, paintings and fabrics are molded to create an effect.

Those entering the field need an artistic perspective, eye for color along with proportion and detail. The knack to visualize different settings is important.

Having the ability to work within a budget is mandatory. So, is the ability to work well with others and to incorporate their desires into the design.

Understanding lighting, patterns, traffic flow and architectural drawings is necessary.

In many cases the designer and decorator may be asked to make a formal presentation to an individual client or a group. So, good communication skills are needed.

Once used primarily by the wealthy and well-to-do businesses, interior design and decoration has not expanded throughout all aspects of our culture. Builders of lower, middle and expensive homes utilize them to aid in design and layout of prototypes and models. Hotels and motels use them to support new construction and for remodeling. Restaurants, department stores, grocery stores, schools, hospitals, universities, and virtually every organizational and government type uses them. Even film and television studios use them to help design sets.

Most in the field are self-employed, about six out of every 10. Nearly 20 percent are employed by interior design and architectural firms. The majority of the rest work for large and small companies.

Many universities offer four year degrees in the fields. Courses are generally in fine arts, architectural drafting, history, business, codes and standards, computer aided design, antiques, and the types of materials used.

The Foundation for Interior Design Education Research has an accreditation program recognized as providing the necessary education for the occupation.

On the job training is often required before becoming a professional.

There are also professional organizations such as the American Society of Interior Designers, which are recommended for membership.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the average interior designer earns about $45,000 annually. Many experienced designers or those in high demand because of their expertise can earn considerably more. Those working for companies can expect a benefits package including health care and retirement.

So, if you like working with architecture and décor, take a look at interior design and decoration. It is a competitive field in Tennessee, so make sure you have the aptitude and motivation to follow the education process through to competition. Consider taking a summer or part-time job in the field to check things out.
