     Vanderbilt University, located just west of downtown Nashville, is one of the nation's top research universities and is a major force in the life of Nashville and Middle Tennessee.
     The university, which enrolled 11,847 students in 2007-08, was listed as the 18th best national university by U.S. News and World Report.
     The university is the largest private employer in Middle Tennessee, with most of the jobs housed at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
